Introduction to Mennonite Brethren
It is my hope that this page help to inform us a little who we are as Mennonite Brethren. I hope to have many different categories under Mennonite Brethren. First, the category of Confessions. This will seek to put our Mennonite Brethren confessional statements and founding documents together in one place.
Another category will be important people in our history. Names like Edwuard Wuest, Johann Oncken, and D Edmond Hiebert.
Theology will be a category where we can post or write articles that trace the history of a particular doctrinal topic, write reviews or make a case for MB believing something in particular.
It seems obvious that we have an identity crisis. Others have recognized this. To start we are a denomination that identifies as Anabaptist and Evangelical (two terms notoriously difficult to define). Second, it seems we have forgotten our history. This is illustrated by the fact that some of these confessional documents are hard to find and I was not the only one that did not know they existed or had not read them. Third, the divers influences on Mennonites as a whole and Mennonite Brethren in particular. Numerous aspects could easily be emphasized over others and who gets to decide which distinctives represent our tradition?
Our doctrinal and confessional history might be helpful to review. This website may not solve the identity crisis, but hopefully it will help to understand a bit better where we have come from and then perhaps a pathway forward for conservative orthodoxy zealous for the gospel.
Thanks to all those who have helped me find some of these documents.
